An English garden Wedding in Gascony
Les Jardins de Coursiana
La Romieu - one of the most charming villages in Gascony, faded powder blue shutters, rambling climbing plants, grey and warm coloured stone, with the 14th century Collégiale Saint Pierre stone cloister & towers attracting tourists and locals all throughout the year also boasts a garden of 6 hectares created by a well known botanist in 1975. With 300 species of trees and shrubs, the jardins have been further developed by Véronique et Arnaud Delannoy and their team to include an English country garden, grand potager, medicine garden - it is bursting with colours, scents, insects…..LIFE. It is here that J & P are planning their wedding when I met them on a grey but balmy September evening together with Abby, wedding planner from La Boutique Events
Starting off outside the old stone farmhouse and beautiful bar & terrace of the local campsite where J spent many summers on holiday and, as she grew up, working, we follow the path through the village towards the jardins that the guests and groom will take on the wedding day.
As we near the Jardins de Coursiana the narrow road straightens as it cuts through an orchard. A washed out sky, the red of J’s clothes, the evolving shades of green, their depth of colour paling, changing as autumn approaches.
I follow the couple and we chat as they walk around the gardens trying to pick the best spot for their ceremony. The problem is there are too many to choose from! A nice problem to have.
We start to head back through the orchards past the swans and the faded green of the willow towards the towers and church of St Pierre - a striking form on the landscape and framed by trees and greenery which surrounds the village.
